This is a two-part class. You can take either part. However to be a phenomenal athlete you should complete both. The first part is called Warrior Conditioning and the second part is called Warrior Skills. This class focuses only on the striking aspect of martial arts. The photo to the left is of a fighter that I trained in an MMA cage-fight. We (well actually not me but him) fought a more experienced opponent and won.
Warrior Conditioning:
This is a pure physical conditioning class. It is open to a wide audience
because the instructor is a personal trainer and has programmed the
concept of progression into the class. Just like all people are at
different levels of fitness, we all need exercise that is challenging
yet achieveable. This class will appeal to a wide audience of people at
various fitness levels. There is a place for you. As you progress you
can advance up the “line” to more challenging exercise. It is based on
when you are ready to take it on. The exercises for a beginner will be
slightly easier than for more advanced.
Warrior Skills:
We use drills and
exercises found in many martial arts and combat sports. In addition,
athletic drills performed by non-martial sports are incorporated to
build a high functioning physical person. In addition, sports
challenges and games are added to test your self and increase
enjoyment. This class interweaves the training and teaching approaches
of traditional martial arts, combat sports and traditional sports.
There is nothing like it!
The class runs twice per week for 55
minutes and includes a full body stretch, intervals, circuit,
plyometrics, agility, balance, endurance, core and recovery phases to
repair your tired muscles. If you are ready, you can move to the next
class which immediately follows.
Warrior Skills is a class with an
emphasis of skills acquisition, adaptation, movement, theory,
philosophy and athletic skill improvement to ensure proper execution
and power. It immediately follows the conditioning class. We will start with a
short stretch. This class is less physically demanding from a
conditioning perspective. The nature is NOT pure conditioning but
skills development. It is still a great workout because you will need
to put everything into the technique. For a great workout, take both
classes.
This is an open approach to striking. That means
we do not endorse one style over another but look at them
complimentary. It is also scientific in that it looks at all options in
striking to see how it fits into sparring. Being a fighter who can
adapt a style of striking and movement to any other is a huge
advantage. We will have elements from boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai,
karate, street concepts and whatever else is useful. You will learn so
many ways to change a technique and use it in ways that work for you
rather than a cookie cutter approach. You will learn ways that lend themselves to your attributes such as size, ability and philosophy. You can test them under control.
This
is a class open to a wide level of ability, fitness level and
experience. It is taught by a personal trainer who has designed
progression into the exercises. There is the concept of the “line”
which separates people based on skill level and interest. Beginners
will be on one side of the line with more expert people down the line.
When training, you can be sure to work with people of your own level
and those just above you. There is a visual ranking system similar to
belts in the martial arts. It is a cloth that hangs over the belt or
band part of your exercise shorts. It is intended to help the
instructor understand your ranking. Since it is a system of
progression, you will be rated on your ability. Since the class has
sparring, you will only spar with those in your similar level. There is
no time line for how long it will take to advance other that ability.
We
will do individual drills, partner drills, mitt and bag work to support
the learning. The level of contact is specific to the level of
experience. Beginners will spar with little or no contact, intermediate
level up to 30 percent of power and it increases from there. However,
there is no tolerance for being disrespectful. The sparring should be a
way to practice and apply what you learn without a fear of being hit
harder than appropriate. Disrespectful students who habitually throw
unnecessary hard strikes will have to leave the class. It is a place to
learn and respect is necessary when sparring. We must trust each other
and there is no egotism. We will introduce the concepts of ideal mental
state for you to incorporate how you feel the best when competing. We
will have options for competing in tournaments when there is interest.
Competition is endorsed.
There is equipment required (est.
$60-$70). You can buy the beginner equipment required for this class
directly from us. Since you may be a beginner we will use equipment
that is still quality but not top shelf. As you progress, you can
choose to use better equipment. We do not have spare equipment (it gets
smelly quick and is not hygienic) so you will want to get your
equipment fast so you can participate.
There is nothing like this class anywhere!
In
addition, we provide an optional fitness assessment which has starting
baselines on weight, conditioning and athletic attributes so you can
see how you are progressing. Updates are done every couple months. The
hope is that you feel tighter, more toned, more athletic and confident.
New
potential students can watch a class but we do not allow free classes
as there is one instructor and it distracts from the others. Feel free
to watch.
For competitive fighters, we can help you implement a mental skills program so you can create your ideal mental state for your fight.
